Until now. Recently the Australia-based rock band resurfaced with ``Shine Like It Does (1979-1997): The INXS Anthology,'' promising the double-disc collection of radio hits, B-sides, alternative mixes and rare tracks on Rhino Records is only the beginning.

In fact, the band is planning to embark on a world tour later this year and begin a new studio album - although there is still no word on a permanent replacement for Hutchence, who was found hanging from the door of his hotel suite.

``We're not really ready to commit to making a decision on a new singer yet,'' says Kirk Pengilly, the band's guitarist.

The band has performed over the course of the last four years with a number of guest singers, including Terence Trent D'Arby.

On the other hand, the band has performed an even greater number of times with John Stevens John Stevens is the name of a number of prominent people:
  • John Stevens, Baron Stevens of Kirkwhelpington (born 1942), former Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police
  • John Stevens (immigrant) (1682-1737), immigrant to America, Port Collector at Perth Amboy.
. The Australian singer, who once fronted the '80s hard rock band Noiseworks, most recently joined INXS for an AIDS benefit in Vienna.

``We all get along like a house on fire with John,'' says Pengilly. ``It feels like a band again.

``But the votes aren't in yet.''

The band is scheduling its upcoming world tour around the availability of Stevens, who will be appearing in an Australian production of ``Hair'' through October.

Before heading out on the road, INXS will be compiling a docufilm about the band with a working title ``Don't Change.'' The film will be produced by Columbia TriStar Productions Australia.

The members of INXS have also been working on individual projects. Pengilly recorded an album for an up-and-coming Sydney-based singer-songwriter named Hugh'ie. Andrew Farriss Andrew Charles Farriss is a rock musician (born 27 March 1959 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia), best known as the keyboardist and key composer for the Australian band INXS. , the main songwriter of the group, produced an album for the well-known Australian country singer Tania Kernaghan Tania Maree Kernaghan (born 18 July, 1968 in Albury, New South Wales) is an Australian country music singer.

``We've always done things outside the band when we've had down time,'' says Pengilly. ``We've obviously had a lot of down time.''

``We're really feeling like it's what we should do now that we've been let off the chain and come back out in the big world again,'' he says. ``So we might be back on that treadmill sooner than you think.''
