Jones, who on June 18 won the U.S. Armed Forces Triathlon in Point Mugu, now trains about 15 hours per week as she prepares to begin her professional career later this year. She will be one of more than 2,000 athletes who will compete Sunday in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Triathlon.

Jones will on Oct. 1 enter the U.S. military's World-Class Athlete Program, reserved for athletes the armed forces deemed to have ``Olympic potential,'' giving her unlimited time to train. Most of the participants in the L.A. Triathlon don't have such luxuries, having to balance training with work and family obligations. It takes devotion to fit training into their lives.

Keith Huyssoon of Castaic wakes up at 4:15 a.m. four days a week to work out before he begins his commute at 6:30. The bulk of his training comes on weekends, when he commits more than three hours per day.

He trains with his wife, Kathy, who says she lived an ``inactive'' lifestyle before starting to run two years ago with her dog. She registered for her first triathlon at Valencia's Paseo Club in July 2004.

Kathy will not compete Sunday after spraining an ankle at the Wildflower Triathlon The Wildflower Triathlon is a triathlon (swim-bike-run race) held at Lake San Antonio in Central California since 1983. It is held the first weekend in May each year.

. She completed the Paseo Club event with a broken toe and shoulder; she was struck by a car while riding her bike four days before the race. When healthy, she trains about 20 hours per week.

``It's become part of my routine,'' she said. ``My husband says, 'Do you realize you worked out three hours today?' It doesn't even dawn on me, because it is so much fun.''

Many triathletes say they already had been participating in one of the sport's three disciplines and became involved in triathlons after deciding to vary their training. Simon Sornoza of Palmdale ran marathons. His son, Richard, is a sophomore swimmer at Highland High in Palmdale. They started competing in triathlons so they could compete in an event together.

People can race in triathlons if they've never swam a lap, ridden a bike or run a 5K. They just have to plan well in advance. BeginnerTriathlete.com recommends 10-15 hours of training per week for 12 weeks before an event.

``The key is keeping your life balanced and making sure you are not sacrificing other aspects of your life to train,'' Remaly said. ``And if you're not having fun, it's time to reassess things.''
