WITH CAR-POOL LANES DONE, WORK TO BEGIN ON 138.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

LANCASTER - In the next few months, Caltrans will complete car-pool lanes along a 6.2-mile section of the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley.  and start widening a section of Highway 138 that has been the scene of fatal crashes.

The $40 million project to add a car-pool lane in each direction along the 14 Freeway between Avenue P-8 and Pearblossom Highway is expected to be completed this summer. The car-pool lanes will ease a bottleneck A lessening of throughput. It often refers to networks that are overloaded, which is caused by the inability of the hardware and transmission lines to support the traffic. It can also refer to a mismatch inside the computer where slower-speed peripheral buses and devices prevent the CPU  where the freeway south of Palmdale narrows to just two lanes in each direction.

State Transportation Department officials also expect to begin work this year to widen wid·en

``This project will go into full-blown construction in the next two to three months,'' said Abdi Saghafi, a Caltrans senior engineer.

In the twin-bridges area, the highway will be widened from two lanes to four. That area has been the scene of numerous crashes, including one that killed three people in 1995.

The area is the only stretch of highway for several miles in which drivers have no shoulder to drive onto in case an oncoming on·com·ing

The car-pool lane connector project, estimated to cost $126.6 million, is still being designed. Although the estimated price has jumped by more than $45 million since its inception, the project is on schedule for construction to begin in early 2007 and be completed in 2009.

``That's good news,'' said Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford.

Ledford said the connector will make commutes easier for residents of the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  by easing congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

and providing continuity of the car-pool lanes on both freeways.

On Highway 138, a $10 million European-style traffic roundabout is planned to consolidate five closely spaced intersections into one and eliminate the 90-degree curve from Palmdale Boulevard onto 47th Street East.

In a roundabout, a driver yields to traffic already in the circle, makes a right turn to enter the circle and makes a right turn to exit. Roundabouts are designed so the traffic in the circle is traveling under 30 mph.

Work on the $10 million project is scheduled to begin in 2007 and be completed in 2008.
