, a regular user of valleynews.com, has regaled us with great action photos of the Crushers softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team, the team his daughter, Cassie, plays on.

Armed with his telephoto lens and a great love for the the game, Colon has been perched in his spot, way out in the outfield, capturing the drama of the games of the Amateur Softball Association's season.

On page 8 he gives you a preview of the 2007 season of the John Burroughs High School John Burroughs High School is a public high school located in Burbank, California. Emilio Urioste, Jr. is the current principal. The school was built in the 1920's, but wasn't established as a high school until 1948. The school was named after naturalist John Burroughs.  (JBHS JBHS Joel Barlow High School (Easton/Redding, CT)

With the season opener only a few weeks away, Richard Colon writes about what could turn out to be an exceptionally interesting season.

The team is going to compete in a new league, called the Pacific League, under a new head coach Nick Schepperle, who is an umpire A person chosen to decide a question in a controversy that has been submitted to Arbitration but has not been resolved because the arbitrators cannot reach agreement, or one who has been chosen to be a permanent arbitrator for the duration of a collective bargaining agreement.  for the Burbank Parks and Recreation Department. In his blog blog, short for web log, an online, regularly updated journal or newsletter that is readily accessible to the general public by virtue of being posted on a website. , called The Forgotten Sports, Colon writes about how much it costs to fund a team -- $25,000-$30,000 -- with the school funding between $2,000 and $5,000, and the league providing some funds for the coaching staff.

He has also promised to give you all the highs and lows from games throughout the season. I hope you too will take this opportunity to register on valleynews.com and post stories and photos about your favorite teams.

And at the right, check out the results from our last survey, posted on valleynews.com.
