WIRELESS, HANDHELD CAPABILITY INTRODUCED WITH DATATRAK EDC FOR CLINICAL TRIAL DATA COLLECTION.

DATATRAK International, Inc. ) industry announced that it is introducing the capability to implement its software, DATATRAK EDC, through deployment with wireless and handheld technology. Initial feasibility and performance assessments were done with a Hewlett Packard Jornada device utilizing Lucent wireless ORiNOCO modem technology. Such wireless technologies allow for connection to a remote analog telephone line as long as the user is within approximately 100 feet of the hard-wire connection. These distances can be extended through the use of repeaters that are appropriately positioned throughout a facility. Wireless and handheld capability is increasingly sought by the pharmaceutical industry and investigators in order to integrate more attractively and productively within the clinical research environment. With such capability, a physician or a research coordinator could enter data while traveling from one exam room to the other in the clinic; or from bedside to bedside in the hospital or Phase I Unit without the need to be tethered Attached to a data or power source by wire or fiber. Importantly, the inherent advantages of ASP delivery are retained, since no data resides on the handheld device. All information is immediately transmitted to the central database upon entry of each individual data item. Loss or breakage of the handheld device does not jeopardize jeop·ard·ize

"Initial assessments of this attractive wireless platform for our product showed amazingly fast performance which was indistinguishable from that seen with traditional Internet Internet

"DATATRAK EDC has been increasingly recognized worldwide over the past year as a premier product, especially with respect to performance, and this speed is not sacrificed even in a wireless mode. Though we have a documented user acceptance rate published at 95% in an international clinical trial consisting of 162 sites in 21 countries, this innovative capability will further add to the attractiveness of our product to investigative site personnel. This capability is a testimony to the competence and vision of our software development and IT teams on producing a product suite with stable foundations and robustness to have not only an unparalleled history of more than six years in this emerging market, but also being able to effectively and quickly migrate to new capabilities in this dynamic area of technology applications. I believe sponsors of clinical research and users will be extremely attracted to this capability."
