WINNING ON YOUR INCOME TAXES USING COMPUTER SOFTWARE AS THE TOOL

WINNING ON YOUR INCOME TAXES USING COMPUTER SOFTWARE AS THE TOOL
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The IRS estimates that 40 percent of the public overpays $600 to $800 in taxes every year.
And that is based on average incomes. If your income is above average, the changes of overpaying are greater.
If you have decided to take responsibility for filing your own income tax this year, you are in good company. Everyone is looking for new and better ways to manage their money in order to save more money. And the income tax process is a perfect place to start.
The process of tax filing must be managed over the entire year. It's all well and good to pull out a shoebox full of receipts on April 14 and attempt to collect or pay what is due. But it doesn't work that way. Expenses must be anticipated and assigned to categories. This is best done in advance of the expenditure.
For most of us, tax time is a time of anguish and worry, midnight oil, burned out calculators and tears. Until now we were dependent upon pencil and pen to support the process.
Now we have new tools to assist us while giving us knowledge that has been available only to CPAs. Computers, both Macintosh and PC, armed with the latest in software, contribute to making you the expert.
Software distributors are projecting the best software tax season ever. With form packages like MacInTax and Turbo Tax being sold with tax guides on disk, your tax future is now in your hands. The tax guides complement and expand the form packages. HyperTax Tutor and Tax Tutor Plus, tax guides that are two programs designed to calculate maximum savings, make it possible for more private individuals and businesses to save real money legally.
According to Dennis Kamensky, the author of the tax guide "Winning on your Income Taxes," now published as a book and software package, "There are three parts to what is required for you to complete your 1040.
"Reducing and adjusting your gross income is the first and most vitally important. Reductions reduce your tax liability.
"The second part concerns exemptions and deductions. The software available will guide you along the decision path. Do you itemize this expenditure or not? The software advises you on IRS limits and deductions that sound 'audit-bells' at the Internal Revenue office.
"Lastly, there are tax credits. You can be guided through this process also with line-by-line, item-by-item coaching."
Those deciding to take their financial and tax management process into their own hands will be rewarded by greater accuracy, greater efficiency, greater savings and quicker filing which result in quicker refunds.
Commenting on the new trend, Dotti D'Attoma, president of SoftStream International, Inc., a software publishing company, said, "When people are under financial pressure, they find that their resourcefulness pays off. They start telling their friends and there is an avalanche of people becoming smarter financial planners."
SoftStream International, Inc. publishes software for the independent developer. Along with 14 software programs in the entertainment and productivity market, the company also publishes Tax Tutor Plus for the IBM PC and compatibles and HyperTax Tutor for the Macintosh.
