WINNERS VOW SAFETY FUNDS CITY WILL MAKE CUTS TO PUT DEPUTIES ON STREET.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Newly re-elected City Council members said they will try to find ways to bolster law enforcement in the wake of the defeat of a tax measure that would have funded 10 additional deputies.

With Measure 04-A, a proposed annual property tax of $25 per parcel, failing to gain even a simple majority, City Council members said they face a difficult task to find funding.

Among the options are pushing Sheriff Lee Baca'a proposed half-cent sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government. , locating grants, and making cuts in other services to free dollars for law enforcement.

``As a fiscal conservative, I will be willing to make tough cuts to put more deputies on the street,'' said Councilman Andy Visokey, who was voted to a third term on the council in Tuesday's balloting. ``I'm prepared to cut services to do that.''

Visokey said it is too early to determine what areas might be cut.

``Voters have said they are fed up with taxes,'' Visokey said. ``But we can't say that because Measure A failed we'll do nothing.''

Councilman Jim Jeffra, a former sheriff's deputy who was also elected to a third term, said he was disappointed with Measure A's defeat. The city will have to ``look at everything under the sun'' to find dollars for law enforcement.

``We'll always go after grant funding for the one-time projects,'' Jeffra said. ``I think we'll be dissecting dis·sect

Deputy District Attorney Brian Berger, one of the backers of the tax measure, said he was hopeful the city would find additional funding.

``We have a good City Council. If there's a way to do it, they will oblige,'' Berger said.
