After weeks of agonizing pillow discussions with his wife - and more than one cold-call offer to help him make a tidy profit by quickly turning over the exclusive property - Stimson opted for the money, a more practical choice for the recent father.

Stimson lucked into the fortunate dilemma last month after his $180 ticket was picked in a raffle sponsored by a nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

Possibly it was an expansion of the letters "U.S.  takes his cut, Stimson will walk away with about $600,000 of his $1 million cash prize.

For Stimson, an apartment dweller who for years longed for a home he and his wife could afford to live in with their newborn daughter, Kyra, it's plenty for a sizable down payment or even a modest home in the Valley or Pasadena - one with a back yard.

``I felt totally relieved after I made the decision,'' said the 48-year-old marketing director at Mission Community Hospital in Panorama City. ``Now I can forge my own future. I just figured half a million dollars in the bank is better than a pile of bricks.

``People told me to take the house, it's going to appreciate. But how could I wait for that? I anguished over it for the first couple of days.''

After all, even with the $1.5 million price tag, that 90210 address would cost him thousands in taxes and upkeep every month. And, despite the jaw-dropping panoramic views, the balcony has hardly enough space for his 8-month-old daughter to crawl around on.

Stimson described the house in the hills above Rodeo Drive Rodeo Drive (IPA: /roʊˈdeɪoʊ/) generally refers to a famous three-block long stretch of boutiques and shops in Beverly Hills, California, United States, although the street stretches further north and south.  as an elaborate bachelor pad A bachelor pad essentially means a house (pad) in which a bachelor or bachelors (single men) live. It should not be confused with a bachelor apartment, which is a zero bedroom apartment where the main room serves as a bedroom, living room and dining room (and sometimes , better suited for an eligible Hollywood hunk than a family man.

And, with California's soaring housing prices igniting fears of an imminent crash, Stimson chose instead to hold out for a house he loved rather than one that was simply lovely.

``We are at such a point with a newborn that we didn't want the hassle of the home,'' said his 38-year-old wife, Laura. ``I don't want to say we took the money and ran, but it's something to push us towards our dream. A home is our dream. That just wasn't the right dream home.''

Instead, Stimson will soon be hunting for a more affordable home with family amenities, such as a big back yard and wide streets, one that is close to relatives in Pasadena, rather than to Gucci or Prada stores.

Still, Stimson has allowed himself one indulgence indulgence, in the Roman Catholic Church, the pardon of temporal punishment due for sin. It is to be distinguished from absolution and the forgiveness of guilt. Now he's getting ready to set up a college fund for his daughter.

``I am just blessed to have this money,'' he said.

City-based Century Housing, which sponsored the contest, the feeling is mutual.

``This fundraiser was really a winner for us, too,'' said Allan Kingston, the company's president. ``Not only did Century have the remarkable opportunity to make someone a millionaire, but, thanks to Nial and other ticket buyers like him, we also raised a lot of money for our More Than Shelter programs.''
