Jonathan Chiusano of Placerita Junior High School took first place in the seventh- and eighth-grade category of the Essay Contest sponsored by the forum. The winning posters, which were on display, and the winning essays, compiled in a booklet, depicted ways in which students can help others in their school and community get along better and improve unity and understanding among diverse groups of people. Mayor Bob Kellar presented awards to the 31 students in four age categories. More than 350 entries were received. Each first-place winner received $100; second place, $75; third place, $50; and fourth place, $25. Each child who entered will receive a McDonald's gift certificate.
