WINLESS GALAXY CRUSHED : L.A. CAN'T FIND SCORING PUNCH IN SAN JOSE SAN JOSE 4, GALAXY 1.

Byline: Marcus Walton Special to the Daily News

Oh, what a difference one offseason makes.

Instead of continuing the total domination of the San Jose San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
Clash that began last season, the Galaxy wound up on the losing end Saturday night of a 4-1 match before 17,628 that proved something to coach Lothar Osiander Lothar Osiander (born November 8, 1939 in Munich, Germany) is a U.S.-German soccer coach who has served as head coach to the U.S. national and Olympic teams as well as the Atlanta Ruckus, Los Angeles Galaxy and San Jose Clash. : Major League Soccer's second-place team from a year ago is not playing up to its reputation.

``We can't score a goal if our lives depend on it,'' Osiander said. ``Last year we were 6-1 against (the Clash). This year we are 0-1 against them and 0-3 in the league.''

This is not the same Clash team the Galaxy faced last season. This is not the same Galaxy team that started the season 12-0.

The Galaxy, after winning six of seven games against the Clash in the league's inaugural season, never seemed able to push its hosts into the panic that seemed to engulf en·gulf

San Jose whenever something went wrong on the field last season.

If the Clash was feeling intimidated by the Galaxy or if there were any doubts about its ability to play with the league runners-up, they disappeared with Dominic Kinnear's header into the upper left corner of the net with 8:51 played.

The doubts came roaring back with a familiar call - a seemingly game-altering penalty kick awarded by the referee at 38:35.

Instead of the referee ruling that Clash defender Ben Iroha pulled down Galaxy forward Cobi Jones Cobi Jones (born June 16, 1970 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American midfielder for Major League Soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy.

Jones is currently the all-time leader of the United States men's national team in appearances, with 164 caps as of the end of 2004 (scoring 15

at the Rose Bowl), it was San Jose's Kinnear who pulled down Welton as the single-name striker ran free inside the box.

The players involved were different, but the result was the same as the previous year. Galaxy midfielder Mauricio Cienfuegos Mauricio Cienfuegos (born February 12, 1968 in San Salvador, El Salvador) is a retired Salvadoran football (soccer) player.

Cienfuegos turned professional in 1985, and played his first season for Racing Junior of his native El Salvador.

``Last year we may have folded at that point and lost,'' Clash coach Laurie Calloway Laurence John "Laurie" Calloway (born June 17, 1945 in Birmingham, England) is a retired English-U.S. soccer defender who spent thirteen years in the English leagues and six years in the North American Soccer League.  said. ``We came out at halftime sure of what we were going to do.''

The Galaxy was unable to put the Clash into the doldrums. San Jose began the second half poised and scored a goal in the 61st minute on a John Doyle John Doyle may refer to:

Doyle's header, on an assist from Westlake native Eric Wynalda, caught Galaxy goalie David Kramer in no man's land - too far away from the ball to change the shot and too far from the goal to react to the ball.

The Galaxy had a territorial advantage throughout most of the match, but seldom threatened.

Los Angeles was without star goalkeeper Jorge Campos, who is playing for Atlante of the Mexican First Division, and standout defender Robin Fraser, out with a groin injury.

San Jose was missing midfielder Shawn Medved, who sat out a one-match suspension after being ejected from the Clash's match at Dallas April 5 for elbowing the Burn's Daniel Peinado.
