WINDS WHIP UP WARNINGS DUST FLURRIES COULD MAKE BREATHING, DRIVING DIFFICULT.

, stirring up dust and drawing highway warnings for campers and trailers, but causing no major problems.

Winds were expected to lessen today, but still reach 25 to 35 mph.

``It's been pretty quiet. We'll probably have the wind advisory in effect for the next couple of days or so,'' said California Highway Patrol Officer Rusty Moore in Lancaster.

The Antelope Valley Air Quality Management District issued a warning that blowing dust today could exceed the federal standard for particulate matter.

Forecasters predicted the Antelope Valley particulate measurement could reach 103 or 104, topping the 100 level set by the federal government as unhealthy for people with lung or heart problems or other chronic diseases.

``We put this out as a health advisory to sensitive people,'' who were cautioned to avoid outdoor activity, said AQMD AQMD Air Quality Management District

The National Weather Service had predicted gusts Wednesday up to 100 mph in the Mojave and Ridgecrest areas, but the wind topped out about 6:45 a.m. with a gust of 69 mph at the Mojave Airport.

Gusts were measured at 48 mph at Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. , 46 mph at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, and 40 mph at Lancaster's Fox Airfield.

Winds were higher elsewhere in Southern California.
