WINDMERE CORPORATION ANNOUNCES FIRST-QUARTER RESULTS

MIAMI LAKES, Fla., April 26 /PRNewswire -- Windmere Corporation (NYSE: WND) today announced a net profit for the first quarter ended March 31, 1993, of $2.1 million or 13 cents per share, as compared with a net loss of ($904,900) or (6 cents) per share reported in the first quarter of 1992.
The 1993 earnings results include a one-time cumulative benefit of $1.8 million, or 11 cents per share, arising from the adoption on Jan. 1, 1993, of a new accounting standard (SFAS 109 "Accounting for Income Taxes"). Sales in the first quarter of 1993 were $35.2 million, an increase of 11.4 percent from the sales of $31.6 million reported in the same quarter last year.
David M. Friedson, president and chief executive officer, said, "We are pleased to report an operating profit in what is traditionally a weak quarter due to the fixed expenses incurred during the shutdown of our 80 percent-owned manufacturing facility over the Chinese New Year holiday period and the seasonality of the company's business."
Windmere is a leading manufacturer and distributor of personal care products and other merchandise for the home and professional salons, including hairdryers, curling irons, kitchen appliances, and dental care appliances.
