WILTEL, NYNEX AND SOUTHWESTERN BELL TELEPHONE MAKE NATION'S FIRST MULTI-COMPANY "FRAME RELAY" CALL

WILTEL, NYNEX AND SOUTHWESTERN BELL TELEPHONE MAKE
NATION'S FIRST MULTI-COMPANY "FRAME RELAY" CALL
ST. LOUIS, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Customer choices for local area network (LAN) interconnection service could expand through a multi-company test of frame relay now under way.
WilTel, NYNEX and Southwestern Bell Telephone have begun a three- month interconnection test of frame relay. The trial network includes locations in Tulsa, Okla., St. Louis and White Plains, N.Y.
Frame relay is a new high-speed data communications service which has wide industry support for use with linking customers' private networks. Transmission speeds can very between 56 kilobits per second (kbps) and 1.544 megabits per second (mbps).
The service is excellent for customers' "bursty" data applications which require "bandwidth on demand" uses such as connecting geographically dispersed LANs, imaging, remote data base access, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and interconnecting system Network Architectures (SNA networks).
Frame relay can improve network performance for customers through reduced transmission delays, more efficient bandwidth utilization and decreased communications equipment costs.
"The move is on to frame relay and this test helps our companies bring the service to more customers," says Chris Heckart, product manager for broadband services for WilTel.
NYNEX also is sold on the benefits of the service.
"Frame relay can substantially speed the transfer of all types of data -- text, numbers and images -- among businesses," explains John Shaw, NYNEX's staff director for data services. "From banks to hospitals, there are a lot of customers who can benefit."
Marty Tanner, frame relay marketing planning manager for Southwestern Bell Telephone, said this test meets a key objective for her company's deployment of frame relay service: how the service might be interconnected to long-distance companies.
"Many customers may require long-distance company connections as they build regional, and even multi-state, frame-relay networks," she says.
The test connected LANs at WilTel's LAN Laboratory in Tulsa, Okla. with NYNEX's Science and Technology Center in White Plains and Southwestern Bell Telephone's Advanced Technology Laboratory(SM) in St. Louis using the WilTel WilPak(SM) frame relay service.
For the trial, NYNEX and Southwestern Bell Telephone used Northern Telecom's DataSPAN frame relay capability. These processors were connected to Northern Telecom DMS-100 switches.
WilTel was the first company to offer a public frame relay service. The company introduced its WilPak frame relay service in March 1991 and now has service available in 171 U.S. cities at six access speeds -- 56/64 kbps, 256 kbps, 384 kbps, 512 kbps, 768 kbps and 1.024 mbps.
NYNEX expects to have the service available in downstate New York by April 1992 and in eastern Massachusetts by mid-1992. The company also demonstrated frame relay with WilTel at the Communications Managers Association conference in New York City in October 1991.
Southwestern Bell, which has a technical trial of frame relay under way in its St. Louis laboratory, plans to begin offering the service to customers in the second half of 1992. The service will be available at 56 kbps, 384 kbps and 1.544 mbps in its metropolitan areas. Other locations will be added upon customers' requests.
