WILLIAMS, MOTON TEAM STANDOUTS.Byline: KEVIN CONNELLY Special to the Daily News It has been a disappointing girls' basketball season so far in the Golden League, as only Knight enters the new year with a winning record. There does not appear to be a truly dominant team in the league as in years past, but Knight (8-7) has enough talent to contend for its first league title in school history with league play set to begin on Wednesday. The main reason for Knight's success has been the fine play of 5-foot-10 forward Jahne Williams, who is averaging 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds this season. The Hawks, ranked No. 21 in the area by the Daily News, have also received 10.9 points and nine rebounds per game from 6-foot sophomore Anttanisha Moton -- the younger sister of Knight boys' basketball standout Jerome Moton. Last season, Knight finished with an 8-4 league record to place third behind Palmdale (12-0) and Lancaster (8-2). This season, both Palmdale (3-8) and Lancaster (2-9) have struggled. Golden League girls' basketball play is set to begin Wednesday. Here is a list of opening-night games: Littlerock at Knight, 7:30 p.m. Highland at Palmdale, 7:30 p.m. Lancaster at Antelope Valley, 7:30 p.m. Quartz Hill idle kevin.connelly@dailynews.com (818) 713-3607 |
