WILLIAM G. PIETERSEN NAMED STERLING WINTHROP EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, AND PRESIDENT, CONSUMER HEALTH GROUP

 NEW YORK, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Sterling Winthrop Inc. today announced that effective at the end of January, William (Willie) G. Pietersen will become Sterling Winthrop executive vice president, and president, Consumer Health Group, reporting to Sterling Winthrop Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Louis P. Mattis. Pietersen succeeds Herbert A. McKenzie in this position, following McKenzie's decision to retire effective Dec. 31, 1992.
 Pietersen brings more than 24 years of experience in consumer marketing to Sterling Winthrop's global consumer health products business.
 Pietersen joins Sterling Winthrop from Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc., where he has held a variety of positions during his four years with the company. Pietersen served as president, The House of Seagram; president, Seagram U.S.A.; president, Tropicana Products, Inc.; and most recently as president, the Seagram Beverage Group and member of the Office of the President, The Seagram Company Ltd.
 Prior to joining Seagram, Pietersen was with the Guinness America from 1986 to 1988, serving first as president, United Distillers Group U.S.A. and Canada, and president, Guinness America.
 From 1968 to 1986, Pietersen gained extensive international experience with Unilever Group, holding a series of increasingly responsible positions including managing director, Van den Berghs in South Africa and then the United Kingdom, and finally as president, Foods Division, Lever Brothers Company, U.S.A.
 Pietersen, a Rhodes Scholar, has an M.A. in Jurisprudence from Oxford University in England, and a B.A. in law and economics and L.L.B., both from Rhodes University in South Africa. From 1963 to 1968, Pietersen was in private legal practice in Cape Town, South Africa. He resides with his family in Connecticut.
