WILLIAM A. EBBERT NAMED PRESIDENT OF ACG ASIA/PACIFIC

TOKYO, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The appointment today of William A. Ebbert to the new position of president of General Motors' (NYSE: GM) Automotive Component Group (ACG) Asia/Pacific operations here reinforces ACG's strategy to compete aggressively in this region of the world, according to J. T. Battenberg III, GM vice president and group executive for ACG Worldwide.
"Under Mr. Ebbert's leadership, ACG Asia/Pacific operations will play a key role in the strategy of ACG Worldwide to grow outside business," Mr. Battenberg said. "The Asia/Pacific region is the world's fastest growing area and ACG Worldwide is poised to capitalize very quickly on the tremendous growth potential."
As part of that strategy, ACG Worldwide opened a technology center near Tokyo in April 1992, to develop components for Asia/Pacific-based automakers.
Some 22 percent of ACG's current business, representing $5.4 billion in sales, is generated outside GM's North American Operations. Much of the opportunity for growth will come from the European and Asia/Pacific markets, where demand is increasing for vehicles equipped with engine management systems, passenger convenience features and safety-related equipment.
Mr. Ebbert, 50, formerly managing director at Vauxhall Motors Limited in Luton, England, joined General Motors in 1965 and has held several positions within GM's automotive components operations. These include assistant divisional comptroller with the former AC Spark Plug Division; director of strategic planning and systems development, director of final drive business unit, and director of production systems with Saginaw Division; and group director of business operations for ACG Worldwide headquarters.
He holds a bachelor's degree in finance from Wheeling College and a master-of-business-administration degree from Michigan State University.
GM ACG Worldwide is based in Pontiac, Mich. The group is comprised of seven divisions: AC Rochester, based in Flint, Mich.; Delco Chassis, based in Dayton, Ohio; Delco Remy, based in Anderson, Ind.; Harrison, based in Lockport, New York; Inland Fisher Guide, based in Warren, Mich.; Packard Electric, based in Warren, Ohio; and Saginaw Division, based in Saginaw, Mich.
ACG Europe is headquartered in Paris and has a technical center located in Luxembourg. ACG Worldwide owns and operates l87 manufacturing plants, with operations in 22 countries.
