WILDFIRE BURNS ABOVE BURBANK BLAZE IGNITES NEAR CASTAWAYS.

BURBANK - As thousands of firefighters battled the day-old Topanga Fire, others were dispatched Thursday to the chaparral-covered hills above Burbank as flames broke out there.

Firefighters in helicopters and on the ground fought a brush fire that ignited ig·nite

``I saw a small spot of fire on this hillside here,'' said Reda Hamoud, a Castaways manager, pointing across a small valley. ``Then all of a sudden it started spreading.

``I thought somebody started the fire, so I ran to see who was there and there was nobody there. Luckily we didn't have the winds we had (Wednesday).''

Some 150 firefighters from Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, and Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city and county were deployed to fight the flames as inmate fire crews dug firebreaks along the steep terrain.

Officially called the Castaways fire, the blaze burned up a steep ridge, away from the restaurant but toward transmission towers atop a Verdugo Mountains The Verdugo Mountains are a small mountain range located just south of the western San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County, Southern California, The United States of America (USA).
