WHOOPI GOLDBERG, CLINT EASTWOOD AND BILL COSBY TOP MCI BEST FRIENDS SURVEY; MCI INTRODUCES 'BEST FRIENDS' SAVINGS PROGRAM

 WASHINGTON, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- When asked who would make a "terrific" best friend -- who did Americans choose? Actress Whoopi Goldberg won the most votes from women and actors Clint Eastwood and Bill Cosby are first according to men polled in the "MCI Best Friends" survey conducted by MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC).
 In conjunction with the national poll of more than 1,000 adults, MCI also announced today "Best Friends," an enhancement to Friends & Family, which allows new and existing MCI customers to choose one "best friend" and receive long distance savings of up to 40 percent on each call.
 WHOOPI, CLINT AND BILL WIN OUT
 When it comes to famous individuals who would make a good best friend, female respondents said Whoopi Goldberg was first (21 percent), while Katie Couric and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton tied for second choice (13 percent). Julia Roberts (12 percent) placed third while Roseanne Arnold was chosen by 8 percent of the respondents.
 Among male respondents, Clint Eastwood and Bill Cosby (25 percent) tied in the competition for America's favorite best friend. Second was Kevin Costner (13 percent) with President Bill Clinton placing fourth (8 percent).
 BIRTHDAYS, WEDDINGS, CHRISTMAS POPULAR CALLING DAYS FOR BEST FRIENDS
 Even though Mother's Day ranks number one among busiest calling days, the MCI Best Friends Survey found the following:
 -- Most best friends (82 percent) call just to say hello;
 -- Best friends were birthdays (58 percent);
 -- Best Friends call to seek advice (55 percent);
 -- Best Friends call with news of a birth, wedding or death (55 percent).
 Holidays were also popular calling days with Christmas and Hanukkah (49 percent), New Year's Day (41 percent) and Valentine's Day (28 percent) cited most frequently.
 SORRY, MOM; SORRY, DAD: PARENTS RANK LOW ON THE LIST OF BEST FRIENDS
 The majority of those surveyed (54 percent) said their best friends was not a relative, but someone they met at work or school. The MCI Best Friends Survey also found that:
 -- Four percent of all respondents rank their father as their best friend;
 -- And just 9 percent consider their mother their best friend.
 BEST FRIENDS KEEP IN TOUCH: MOST TALK AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK
 The majority of those surveyed (68 percent) said they spoke on the phone with their best friend at least once a week and 53 percent of Americans polled said they talk to their best friends several times a week or everyday.
 MCI LAUNCHES SAVINGS PROGRAM FOR BEST FRIENDS
 Beginning today, MCI is offering Friends & Family customers the least expensive call consumers can make to their best friend. Friends & Family customers may designate one "Best Friend" phone number to receive a guaranteed 20 percent savings every time they call that number, even if the Best Friend is not an MCI customer.
 If the "Best Friend" joins MCI then the customer's savings increase to 40 percent every time the Best Friend number is called. There is a $1 monthly fee for subscribers to the MCI Best Friends program. The MCI Best Friends program is an umbrella program -- the discounts apply on top of MCI's low rates and on top of MCI's discount calling plans.
 The MCI Best Friends survey was conducted Dec. 2-5, 1993, as a telephone survey among a national sample of 1,025 adults comprising 508 men and 517 women 18 years of age or older, living in private households in the United States. The national survey was directed by Roper Starch Worldwide, Inc. The margin of error on the poll was plus or minus 3 percent.
