WHOLE LOT OF O'S FOR WEAVER ROOKIE TEAMS UP WITH BULLPEN FOR SHUTOUT VICTORY ANGELS 1, BALTIMORE 0.

Byline: BEN VILLA Staff Writer

Through the first part of Monday night's game, the Angels looked tired and lifeless as if they ate too much at a Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894.  barbecue, but luckily for them, Jered Weaver Jered David Weaver (born October 4, 1982 in Northridge, California), is a Major League Baseball starting pitcher with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Jered attended college at Long Beach State University where he was the 2004 College Baseball's Golden Spikes Award winner.

pitched a perfect ninth to extend his scoreless streak to 25 1/3 innings as the Angels blanked the Orioles 1-0 in front of 38,217 at Angel Stadium.

But Monday night, he looked like the pitcher who began his career 9-0.

``I'm not going to be perfect every time out and my last start I got banged around pretty good, so it was important to bounce back like this,'' Weaver said. ``I knew by the way things were going that I had to keep the team in the game and tonight was a real confidence booster for me.''

The win was also an especially big one for the Angels, who pulled to within 6 1/2 games in the American League West The American League West is one of three divisions in Major League Baseball's American League.  at the outset. The right-hander, who's been notoriously tough on the Angels in his career, going 5-1 with a 2.10 ERA, managed to wiggle out of danger in the first two innings.

But in the fourth, the Angels finally managed to scrape together the game's only run. With one out, Juan Rivera Juan Rivera may refer to:

doubled, and after Howie Kendrick lined out, Adam Kennedy hit a ball up the middle that allowed Rivera to score and give the Angels a 1-0 lead.

``I was trying not to think too much up there and I wanted to put a good swing on the ball,'' Kennedy said. ``He hung a curveball, and I stood with it and it got through.

``Rodrigo always throws well against us and he's a tough matchup. He throws the ball in and out a lot, he keeps us off-balanced and it seems like he always has a lot of success against us.''

The Orioles threatened to tie the score in the top of the fifth inning when Jay Gibbons and Kevin Millar began the inning by getting base hits off Weaver.

But the rookie right-hander once again showed poise beyond his years when he got David Newhan to ground into a fielder's choice and then got Ramon Hernandez to hit into a double play to end the inning.

Weaver left after the seventh inning, scattering six hits while striking out five and walking one.

``I think Jered placed the ball in good zones tonight, and that's what it came down to,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ``Tonight, he didn't have many runs to work with but he responded to it by pitching great. He doesn't let one bad outing get to him.''

Scot Shields retired the side in the eighth before giving way to Rodriguez.

The Angels closer got a groundout by Melvin Mora to begin the ninth inning, then struck out Nick Markakis. Miguel Tejada reached base on an infield single, but Rodriguez ended the game by getting Gibbons Famous people named Gibbons include:

 to ground to first.

It was Rodriguez's 39th save, and he has converted 25 out of his past 26 saves chances.

About the only thing that went wrong for the Angels was that Vladimir Guerrero's 20-game hitting streak was snapped after he went 0for 4.
