WHITMAN CORPORATION ANNOUNCES PUBLIC OFFERING

 CHICAGO, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Whitman Corp. (NYSE: WH) announced today the public offering of $125 million of its 7-1/2 percent notes due 2003, priced to yield 7.55 percent. Proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes, including repayment of existing debt.
 Bruce S. Chelberg, chairman and chief executive officer, said, We are very pleased with the reception of this offering, which represents a major step in our ongoing program to restructure Whitman's debt over the next few years.''
 The notes are not redeemable prior to maturity. The offering was underwritten by The First Boston Corp. and Merrill Lynch & Co. Whitman Corp.'s operating companies are Pepsi-Cola General Bottlers, Midas International and Hussmann Corp.
