 WHITMAN BOARD ELECTS CHELBERG CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
 CHICAGO, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Whitman Corp. (NYSE: WH) announced today that its board of directors has elected Bruce S. Chelberg chairman and chief executive officer. He succeeds James W. Cozad, who has retired, as planned, from that position at the corporation's annual meeting, May 7, 1992. Cozad will continue as director of the corporation.
 Chelberg, 57, joined Whitman Corp. in 1982 as senior vice president- international. He was elected senior vice president-corporate planning and development in 1982, senior vice president-consumer services in 1984, executive vice president in October 1985, and a director in 1988.
 Prior to joining Whitman, he was president, chief operating officer, and a director of Trans Union Corp. He joined Trans Union as an attorney in 1958 upon graduation from law school at the University of Illinois, where he also earned a B.S. degree in commerce.
 Chelberg is a director of First Midwest Bancorp and a member of the advisory board of the Schwinn Bicycle Company. He is also a member of the Illinois State Board of Higher Education and the American and Illinois Bar Associations.
 Whitman Corp.'s operating companies are Pepsi-Cola General Bottlers, Midas International, and Hussmann Corp.
