 WHITEWATER RAFTING SEASON STARTS IN MAY
 THE FORKS, Maine, April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- As the snow melts,


whitewater rafters get ready to kick off a new season on Maine's scenic whitewater rivers. Northern Outdoors will begin guided adventures down the Kennebec, Penobscot and Dead Rivers in May.
 The season opens on the Kennebec River on May 2 with daily 12-mile adventures from Harris Dam to The Forks through the Kennebec Gorge. Daily Penobscot River adventures begin on May 23 with the exciting 14-mile descent from McKay Station to Pockwockamus Falls through Ripogenus Gorge and the Cribworks.
 The scenery is spectacular in this Maine wilderness, offering opportunities to see an abundance of wildlife. Moose, osprey and bald eagles are common sights.
 Northern Outdoors is Maine's oldest and largest whitewater rafting outfitter. The company is owned by Wayne Hockmeyer who was the first outfitter to guide commercial raft trips down Maine's rivers. "We enjoyed a record season during 1991," stated Hockmeyer, "and we're looking forward enthusiastically to another great year in 1992."
 All adventures include a lunchtime steak cookout, all equipment, and the services of a professionally trained and certified Maine guide. Northern Outdoors offers all-inclusive two-day adventure vacation packages which combine whitewater rafting with other guided adventures such as horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing or hiking. The facilities at The Forks Resort Center and The Penobscot Outdoor Center offer accommodations for overnight lodgingr? outdoor camping, restaurant, bar, pool, saunas, and hot tubs.
