WHITEHALL LABORATORIES, DIVISION OF AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS CORPORATION, TO MARKET FIRST HOME CHOLESTEROL TEST

NEW YORK, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- American Home Products Corporation (NYSE: AHP) announced today that its consumer products division, Whitehall Laboratories, will market the first over-the-counter home cholesterol test in the U.S. under the trade name of CholesTrac.
Through a licensing agreement with ChemTrak, Inc., a consumer health diagnostics device company in Sunnyvale, Calif., which received approval today from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the over-the- counter test, Whitehall Laboratories will market CholesTrac starting mid-year 1993.
According to Stephen Stravinsky, M.D., vice president of medical affairs for Whitehall Laboratories, the American Heart Association estimates that approximately 125 million Americans have cholesterol levels above 200 milligrams/deciliter, which may put them at increased risk of developing heart disease.
"The home cholesterol test is designed as a screening test for high cholesterol. It is simple, easy to use and an accurate way of letting consumers measure their cholesterol at home. We hope this is the first in a series of new diagnostic products that provides significant benefit to consumers."
Whitehall Laboratories is one of the largest manufacturers of over- the-counter health and personal care products in the world, such as Advil, Dristan and Preparation H.
American Home Products Corporation is one of the world leaders in prescription drugs, O-T-C medicines, medical supplies, diagnostic equipment and food products.
