Programs that qualified the city for the award will be marked with a trademarked ``White House Millennium Council'' logo, said Terri Maus, the city director of field services, who prepared the city's application.

City officials highlighted for the White House award three programs they felt celebrated the city's Old West heritage and prepared for the future, while intergrading much community involvement, Maus said.

``Our application, for the most part, was based on our strategic planning efforts, the annual Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival and the millennium time capsule capsule

The city generally holds strategic planning sessions every three years for residents to guide elected officials and staff members in preparing goals and objectives.

For the next ``Share the Vision'' sessions scheduled for April and May, the city plans to incorporate multimedia technology, such as computers and live television, to increase public input.

The Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival, sponsored by the city and held every spring at the historic Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio, features musicians, storytellers, theatrical performances and Old West ranching activities such as roping. Additional activities this year will be held at other historic points of interest, including Mentryville, the Placerita Canyon Nature Center and the William S William, crown prince of Germany
