WHEELING-PITTSBURGH STEEL PRODUCTS EARN 'CERTIFIED STEEL' STATUS
WHEELING, W.Va., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. (NYSE: WHX) has received notification from Certified Shipping Transport Inc. (CSTI), Silver Spring, Md., that steel products manufactured at its Yorkville, Ohio, and Allenport, Pa., plants have earned "certified steel" status.
Steel products receiving kosher/halal certification are acceptable to the Jewish, Islamic and Seventh Day Adventist faiths for the packaging of food and beverage products worldwide.
To receive certification as a producer of kosher/halal steel, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel agreed to an evaluation of the surface lubricants used in the Yorkville and Allenport operations. Animal-based lubricants were eliminated in favor of synthetic or vegetable-based oils in the processing of container and packaging steels following annealing.
In a letter to the company, Rabbi Jonah Gewirtz, chairman of Certified Shipping Packaging Transport, announced certification of cold rolled, tin plate, tin free steel and black plate steel until March 31, 1993. At that time, Wheeling-Pittsburgh's sheet steel and tin mill products manufactured for packaging applications in the food and beverage industries will be subject to a renewal evaluation audit.
CSTI was established primarily for industries and related suppliers in food containment, and Gerwitz has predicted that "virtually every American steelmaker, as well as industrial lubricant producers, will be certified or in the process of obtaining certification by this summer."
