WHEELABRATOR TECHNOLOGIES TO BUILD RECYCLING MILL IN OKLAHOMA
OAK BROOK, Ill., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. (NYSE: WTI), a majority-owned subsidiary of Waste Management, Inc. (NYSE: WMX), today announced plans for its Rust International Corporation to build a $240 million linerboard recycling mill in Muskogee, Okla.
The mill represents one of the largest and most technologically advanced recycling projects of its kind in the United States. The project will closely integrate Wheelabrator Technologies' and Waste Management's strengths in waste collection and transfer with the development of environmentally sound recycling technologies.
The recycling mill will employ advanced technology to convert 320,000 tons per year of old corrugated boxes into more than 272,500 tons of 100-percent recycled linerboard.
Rust International Corporation, the third largest design/construct contractor in the United States and the largest serving the paper industry, plans to begin construction of the mill this summer. Production of recycled linerboard at the mill is expected to commence in mid-1994.
The mill will be owned and operated by a limited partnership formed for that purpose. General partners in the Muskogee project include Stonemart, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stone Container Corporation, the world's largest linerboard manufacturer, and Muskogee Mill Corporation. A Wheelabrator Technologies subsidiary also will be a general partner. In addition, Wheelabrator Technologies, Stone Container, Kenaf of North America, Inc. and Llama Company will be limited partners.
Construction of the mill will require a workforce of up to 800 people, most hired locally in Oklahoma. The construction period is expected to infuse as much as $100 million from wages and the purchase of materials and equipment into the region's economy. A permanent workforce of 120 people, most of whom will be trained in Muskogee, will run the mill. The direct financial impact on the community of salaries, local procurements and taxes from the operating mill will exceed $40 million annually.
Wheelabrator Technologies is the United States' largest developer and operator of municipal trash-to-energy projects and provides leading environmental systems and services for environmental monitoring and restoration, air quality control, water and wastewater treatment, sludge management, organic waste composting and public infrastructure development.
Waste Management, through is RECYCLE AMERICA program, is the country's largest provider of recycling services, with 600 curbside programs that service four million households. Together Wheelabrator and the Waste Management family of companies represent the nation's most comprehensive and experienced environmental services organization.
