WHEELABRATOR TECHNOLOGIES APPLAUDS NEW YORK'S APPROVAL
OF WASTE PLAN INTEGRATING RECYCLING, TRASH-TO-ENERGY
OAK BROOK, Ill., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials of Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. (NYSE: WTI) praised New York City officials following City Council approval early today of a solid waste plan that integrates recycling and the city's first modern trash-to-energy facility.
Under the plan, Wheelabrator Technologies' Wheelabrator Environmental Systems Inc. subsidiary would construct, own and operate a 3,000-ton-per day trash-to-energy facility in the Brooklyn Navy Yards.
The city has estimated the value of the construction project at approximately $450 million. Under current plans, construction would begin in 1996 and operations would commence in 1999. In processing the city's waste, the plant would generate steam, providing the energy equivalent of approximately one million barrels of oil a year. The company, awarded the contract by New York in 1985, would process the city's solid waste for 20 years.
"We applaud New York's approval of this model integrated waste management plan," said Phillip B. Rooney, chairman and chief executive officer of Wheelabrator Technologies. "New York's leadership in emphasizing recycling and waste reduction combined with our waste processing and energy recovery systems will serve as a model for major municipalities seeking solutions for their waste disposal problems. We're delighted to enter into this public-private partnership with the people of New York."
Wheelabrator Environmental Systems is the nation's leading developer and operator of trash-to-energy plants. The company operates 14 commercial recycling and trash-to-energy facilities that have converted more than 37 million tons of trash into clean energy since 1975.
