Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. on a 20-mile bicycle ride through the west San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. on Saturday, the latest in the mayor's ``Ride L.A.'' series to promote cycling. Cycling is ``high adventure because of all the people you meet,'' said Janice Eunice of the San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire. . ``You are closer to people,'' she said. ``You are not closed up in a car.'' Judy Soyster of Woodland Hills said the event also provided a unique opportunity for a bike tour with a police escort and rescue equipment to make riders feel safe. ``I think this is great,'' Soyster said. ``I'd love to see river beds turn into a bicycle path.'' A rescue vehicle went along in case of emergency, said Bobby Sherman, a medical-training specialist for the LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel. 2. Although the ride was in the San Fernando Valley, it drew participants from throughout the Los Angeles area on bicycles ranging from simple ones to sophisticated mountain bikes. One purpose of the event was to make motorists more aware of others who ride their bikes for fun and also for pollution-free job commuting. ``It's being aware of keeping our air clean, having fun and going out with teammates,'' said Todd Christopher, 35, of Tarzana, who is a member of the Encino Cyclery Club. The mayor's ride, which started and ended at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, went through Warner Center, West Hills and Canoga Park, with a stop at the Lazy J Ranch Park on Valley Circle Boulevard. Then it continued through Winnetka, Northridge and Reseda. ``I love it,'' Riordan said. ``I feel like a kid. It's a great community event . . . seeing some of the great parts of the Valley.'' This was the second in a five-ride series this year organized by the mayor, the Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here. For other uses, see LAPD (disambiguation). The rides are a way to gather people and explore the beauty of Los Angeles neighborhoods, said Mark Flaisher, a consultant for the mayor and coordinator of the event. ``We take people places where they haven't visited, in a much slower pace - it's out of a car,'' Flaisher said.
