WHAT YOU WILL SEE ON THE BROADCAST.

Byline: Valerie Kuklenski Staff Writer

IS IT POSSIBLE? Come Monday morning, might Grammy viewers actually discuss the winners and losers in the recording industry's big night?

Just a week after an MTV-produced Super Bowl halftime show left CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  red in the face, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake apologetic and FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite.  affair than in recent years.

For one thing, CBS has worked out a way to delay the live telecast and make quick edits of objectionable images, as it has done for years with offensive language. From an edgy entertainer's view, what's the point of doing something outrageous if nobody at home sees it?

Here's a little of what we know about tonight's telecast, which starts at 8 p.m. on Channel 2:

Most hosts

, Cuba Gooding Jr., Sarah Jessica Parker, Jack Black, George Lopez and Ellen DeGeneres. The roster excludes Janet Jackson, who was expected to take part in a tribute to r&b great Luther Vandross. Whether she bowed out, was uninvited or never was invited in the first place depends on whom you ask.

Seems like only 'Yesterday'

CBS, the network that first brought four mop-topped lads from Liverpool into American living rooms, honors the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' U.S. debut on ``The Ed Sullivan Show'' with renditions of their early tunes by Sting, Dave Matthews, Vince Gill and Pharrell Williams. Look for lots of shrieking and weeping in the audience - among women 55 and over.

Love to Luther

Vandross, recovering from a severe stroke he suffered last April, had been looking forward to attending this year's Grammys ceremony, where he is up for five awards, including best r&b album for ``Dance With My Father.'' But doctors advised him against it. Celine Dion, Alicia Keys and Richard Marx will take part in a tribute performance.

Justin not busted

While Jackson is sidelined on Grammy night in the wake of Nipplegate, the show will go on for her cohort in halftime crime. Timberlake is set to perform and is up for five Grammys, including Album of the Year for ``Justified'' and Record of the Year for ``Where Is the Love'' with the Black Eyed Peas This article is about the American hip hop group. . Granted, it was easier to replace Jackson in her presenter role than it is to arrange a last-minute substitute act for Timberlake and to prevent him from delivering as many as five acceptance speeches. But that didn't keep Janet fans from crying foul over the different treatment for the bustier bus·tier

What to wear?

Hard to believe now, but 15 years ago the Grammy Awards were a formal affair for men as well as women. In 1990 the talked-about trend was studs instead of bow ties on the tux shirts. Now the studs are anywhere but starched shirt fronts, and CBS executives are hoping the artists keep most of them out of sight. To get a look at what they are wearing, Channel 2 has a preshow at 6:30 p.m. Or you can jump the gun with Joan and Melissa Rivers on the red carpet at 6 p.m. on E!
