WHAT THE WEB HAS FOR TODAY'S POINT-AND-CLICK KIDS.

Byline: Tim Grobaty Knight-Ridder Tribune News Wire

to find that, with the increasing popularity and accessibility of the World Wide Web, more and more kids are spending less and less time in front of the boob tube. Of course, when we were kids, we spent hours and hours in front of the boob tube, and look how good we turned out. Might be that Web children one day will turn out to be a nation of point-and-click morons.

But that's doubtful, when you consider the wealth of educational sites available to kids on the Web nowadays (as opposed to the olden old·en

James Laub, who teaches computing to 12- to 14-year-olds at Franklin Middle School Franklin Middle School is the name of many middle schools, usually named after Benjamin Franklin, including:

  • Franklin Middle School (Vallejo,California)
  • Franklin Middle School (Nutley, New Jersey)
in Long Beach, has sent his list (via e-mail, of course) of his students' favorite Web hangouts - both educational and free-time sites. Of the two categories, the educational ones seem to us to be more inspired and, for that matter, more fun, than the so-called fun spots.

First, there's the Interactive Frog Dissection (Netfrog) site, which takes the real-life (as it were) dead frog out of the students' hands and replaces it with a cybermodel whose dissection you can watch via downloadable QuickTime video clips. For our money, though, a better frog-dissection site is the Frog Dissection Kit, dedicated to the carving up of a frog named Fluffy. Here, you can flip the frog Flip the Frog is an animated cartoon character created by American cartoonist, Ub Iwerks. Laub's students also nominate the Cambodian site, Beauty and Darkness, an aptly named source that covers the rich and tragic history of that country. The site has numerous offerings, including a Photo Gallery that ranges from Phnom Penh Phnom Penh (nŏm pĕn, pənŏm`) or Phnum Penh (pənm`), city (1994 est. pop.  street scenes to the somber sight of skulls at Chhoueng Ek and views of prisoners taken prior to their execution. There are also pages devoted to artful aspects of Cambodian culture, including dance, painting, sculpture and music.

Next, we move over to the art and genius of Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci (də vĭn`chē, Ital. lāōnär`dō dä vēn`chē), 1452–1519, Italian painter, sculptor, architect, musician, engineer, and scientist, b. near Vinci, a hill village in Tuscany.  at what Laub calls the best da Vinci da Vinci Surgery A surgical robot for performing certain surgeries–eg, mitral valve repair and laparoscopic procedures–eg, cholecystectomy and gastric ulcer repair. The museum site is divided into four ``wings.'' The east wing features the artist's oil paintings, including the greatest hits ``Mona Lisa'' and ``The Last Supper Last Supper, in the New Testament, meal taken by Jesus and his disciples on the eve of the passion. Jesus broke bread and passed a cup of wine among the disciples, identifying himself with the bread and the wine and linking the meal to his impending death on the ,'' each accompanied by bits of lore surrounding the work.

So, we've diced up Fluffy, explored Cambodia, stuck our nose down a volcano and built a da Vincian sequin-o-matic. Enough with the serious stuff. What do Laub's students do when it's the Web equivalent of Miller time?

``Sanrio is the spot where all the young girls go first'' when it's free-time on the school's computers, says Laub.

Teen-age boys, says Laub, hustle over to the Nintendo site, where you can find all manner of product information relating to the company's latest video games. Gender finds common ground on the remaining sites.

For TV, kids' favorite spot is the Fox network's Foxworld, a springboard to further Web pages relating to ``The Simpsons,'' ``The X-Files,'' ``Melrose Place,'' ``Millennium'' and other Foxy programming.
