FOR SOPHISTICATES

OK, so you don't want to face the writhing crowds downtown, and a night doing the Electric Slide in a Stetson doesn't float your boat. FOR PARTY PEOPLE

Scott Kirkland has a nice DJ gig lined up on New Year's Eve - he's spinning dance beats in two cities for an estimated 20,000 people. One of those events will take place at downtown's 48-hour Giant Venture party.

Kirkland, of the Los Angeles dance/electronic duo Crystal Method, acknowledges a certain amount of weight on his shoulders. His job, after all, is ensuring that enormous numbers of people remain upright and involved in the music on the biggest party night of the year.

``The hardest thing is not to allow yourself to get too nervous and start partying yourself,'' Kirkland said.

``When you have the combination of nerves and the party starting too early in the DJ booth, you end up running out of steam. You've got to be in control the whole time - especially on New Year's.''

Crystal Method (which also includes DJ/musician Ken Jordan) is among a full roster of edgy dance acts on the bill at Giant Venture. After the duo's set - scheduled to begin sometime around 9 p.m. Dec. 31, and continuing through the first whoops Whoops

How to prepare for such an adrenalin rush? ``Sleep most of the day,'' Kirkland says.

The 48-hour party people at the Bonaventure, though, aren't looking forward to rest. Billed as a ``city within a city,'' Giant's New Year's celebration takes place under the hotel's roof, taking in grand ballrooms, rooftop gardens, revolving lounges, bars, restaurants, rooms and suites. ``We've got a full-on dance club event and 35 floors of hotel rooms,'' Giant director Dave Dean said. ``One of the ballrooms is the size of a football field. People dress for fun, some in costume. The nice thing is if you're staying at the Bonaventure or in a nearby hotel, you can change your outfit to fit the mood.''

FOR COUNTRY FANS

must've been thinking of the Cowboy Palace Saloon when he penned his current country chart-topper, ``I Love This Bar,'' about an especially authentic honky tonk. After all, he shot the video for the song there.

Long a popular destination for the Valley's country crowd, Chatsworth's down-home Cowboy Palace will be bustling New Year's Eve when the bar's hands-down favorite band, Big City, lights sparks under dancers' boots.

Keith isn't expected to drop by on Dec. 31, but if he did, he'd find plenty to celebrate about the place, which offers live country music seven nights a week.

First of all, there's the laid-back atmosphere, helped along by good- natured na·tured

barkeeps and waitresses who pride themselves on learning your name and, once they know you, have a favorite drink ready before you can shake the dust off your spurs.

The Cowboy Palace also offers easy parking for horse and man. A dozen hitching posts line the street out front, so Chatsworth-area ranchers can simply ride on over. Then, of course, there are the regulars, many of whom are Western stuntmen who break, shoe, breed, board and train horses for a living.

Local riders and ropers have been flocking to the place for more than 30 years.
