WHAT RECESSION? JBI POSTS 30 PERCENT SALES GROWTH
WILLISTON, Vt., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- JBI, makers of Jogbra(R)

Sports Bras and MAX sports support products for men, announced today a 30 percent increase in sales during 1991.
JBI President Hinda Miller attributed the steep growth partly to brisk sales in the men's line of the new "Power Liner" compression shorts which, she said, "give men the same kind of technical support and fabrication that has made us the experts in women's sports support."
Another key factor, she said, was the launch of an interactive sports bra merchandising display last year that lets customers use a Motion Control Requirement(tm) wheel to choose a bra. The choice is based on biomechanical research of the degree of "breast bounce" for various activities and body types. JBI has the only line of sports bras based on scientific motion control research.
That research led to this year's launch of a major new product line engineered especially for larger-breasted, active women. With nearly half of all U.S. women needing a C-cup bra or larger, Miller said the company expects these products to sustain JBI's rate of growth.
JBI marketing stresses the company's position as inventors of the first sports bra and leaders in high-tech innovation.
Their story of two women inventing the sports bra in 1977 by sewing together two jock straps to relieve their own discomforts of running earned their prototype a place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's historic costume collection. The Smithsonian Institution owns the first Jogbra to be sold in stores.
Acquired by Playtex Apparel in 1990, Miller said JBI has kept its "small-company entrepeneurial practices of personally going out into the marketplace and talking to our customers and then basing our new product development on what they are telling us.
"Then we do our extensive scientific research and wear testing before launching any new style," she said. Marketed as sports equipment, JBI Jogbras and MAX products are sold primarily in sporting goods stores throughout the United States.
