Byline: Greg Hernandez Staff Writer

Despite the 50 million viewers who watched the final episode of ``Friends'' last week - many of whom probably taped it - there are still big expectations for the DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

``You certainly want to cash in on all the buzz associated with the wrap,'' said Ralph Tribbey, editor of DVD Release Report, an industry newsletter. ``(Warner) could have waited but if you sit on it for a few months, it's 'who cares?'''

The DVD contains two versions of the final episode: the episode shown on television last week as well as a slightly longer version with unseen footage. The DVD also contains the original 1994 pilot episode.

The disc retails for $14.99 but is selling for far less this week at such online retailers as BestBuy.com ($7.99), Amazon.com ($10.48), Walmart.com ($9.44) and in stores such as Target ($9.99) and Circuit City ($7.99).

``We have good expectations for it,'' said Best Buy spokesman Brian Lucas. ``(Warner) has done a good job of making sure there are added features. It will appeal to the collector as well as the fan who is perhaps sad to see the series go and is in the mood for some additional content.''

``It plays a lot into the general popularity of TV on DVD,'' Lucas said. ``A lot of these shows are available whenever you want them in syndication See syndication format.  but that doesn't mean people don't want to own them. People have such a strong attachment to some of these shows. They like having them available whenever they want and however they want, and they like to be able to choose the episode they are watching.''

While boxed sets of entire seasons of television shows have become commonplace on store shelves, releasing a single episode is rare although the last episode of the WB network's ``Dawson's Creek'' came out several months after that show ended its five-season run last year.
