WHAT'S THE BEST BACKGROUND FOR TODAY'S CHIEF EXECUTIVES?
Survey Shows Marketing and Accounting Top the List
MENLO PARK, Calif., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- If you aspire to become a CEO and your background is in either marketing or accounting, you may have a competitive edge.
According to a recent survey, experience in marketing and accounting is most suited to the top corporate job -- together these fields received 56 percent of the responses. Also mentioned were operations, law, technical fields, public relations, human resources and a combination of the above.
The survey was developed by Robert Half International, the world's largest personnel firm specializing in the accounting, finance and information systems fields. It was conducted by an independent research firm, which polled 200 executives of the nation's 1,000 largest companies.
Respondents were asked: To become a CEO of most companies today, what type of background is most suitable? Their response:
 Sales/Marketing 29 percent
 Accounting/Finance 27 percent
 Operations 22 percent
 Generalist 8 percent
 Legal 3 percent
 Technical 3 percent
 Public Relations 1 percent
 Human Resources 1 percent
 Other 6 percent
 Total 100 percent
In a related survey, a significant number of executives -- 72 percent -- felt that top management would be more reliant during the '90s on information provided by the accounting department than it was in the '80s.
"Together, the two studies point to the critical role of accounting expertise, even at the highest level of an organization," said Max Messmer, chairman and CEO of Robert Half International Inc.
"While good financial controls have always been important, corporate mismanagement in the '80s and tough economic times seem to have underscored just how crucial this function really is."
There are more than 150 Robert Half offices in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe.
