Blues Hunter: For decades, bluesman Long John Hunter John Hunter may refer to:
  • John Hunter (architect) (1932-2005), British architect and conservationist
  • John Hunter (Canadian politician), Canadian politician
  • John Hunter (New South Wales) (1737-1821), Governor of New South Wales
was a secret, little known outside the border region between El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico.

Hunter held court for 13 years at Juarez's infamous Lobby Bar, where the singer-guitarist kept a riotous crowd entertained with wild showmanship and fiery riffs.

It wasn't until 1992 and the release of his critically acclaimed ``Ride With Me'' album that Hunter began to get a taste of a wider audience. His breakthrough came four years later with ``Border Town Legend,'' which sparked feature stories and reviews across the country.

Hunter, on the heels of his new ``Swinging From the Rafters'' disc, appears tonight at B.B. King's Blues Club at Universal CityWalk.

Born in 1931, Hunter had no aspirations of becoming a professional musician until one night in Beaumont, Texas, at the age of 22, when he caught King at a local club. Hunter bought his first guitar the next day.

B.B. King's is at 1000 Universal Center Drive, Universal City. Show time is 10 p.m. Tickets are $10. Information: (818) 622-5471.

`Sunday' in New York: A tender yet tough-minded look into the minds of unhappy New Yorkers, ``Sunday'' won two well-deserved awards at the Sundance Film Festival. Starring British actors David Suchet as a downsized American executive and Lisa Harrow as a displaced English actress, it's an intriguing exploration of how deception sometimes can lead to unusually deep connections.

When Harrow mistakes the homeless Suchet for a famous film director, they spend a cold Queens afternoon learning about each other and deluding themselves. First-time feature director Jonathan Nossiter keeps the whole encounter fresh and full of surprises, creating not only a fascinating puzzle picture, but also an insightful look at desperate people using everything they have to steal a little satisfaction.
