WESTWAVE COMMUNICATIONS' V-SWITCH ACCESS SOFTSWITCH OPENS SERVICE PROVIDER NETWORKS.


Westwave Communications Inc., the developer of the world's first standards-based access softswitch, has unveiled its powerful new V-Switch access softswitch for carrier next generation networks. The V-Switch is a revolutionary new type of softswitch that provides call control and signaling for access devices at the network edge. The V-Switch is a breakthrough switching product that enables next generation digital loop carriers In telephone communications, a technology that increases the number of channels in the local loop by converting analog signals to digital and multiplexing them back to the end office.  (NGDLCs) to operate independently of the Class 5 switch by providing dial tone and services directly to the access device. The V-Switch is currently engaged in multiple service provider trials.

Westwave's platform supports a standard-based open access architecture, which enables low cost migration of voice networks to next generation packet-based services. The architecture, comprised of three logically separate layers, separates physical control of the access network from the logical control of its services.

The Media Layer - The media layer defines service delivery and consists of access devices, such as NGDLCs, digital subscriber line access multiplexers A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) allows telephone lines to make faster connections to the Internet. It is a network device, located near the customer's location, that connects multiple customer Digital Subscriber Lines (DSLs) to a high-speed Internet  (DSLAMs), voice-over-DSL gateways, and media/trunking gateways. The access switch (V-Switch) supplies all control and intelligence to these access devices.

The Control Layer - The control layer, or access switching layer, handles call control and signaling functionality and acts as a mediator between the other two layers. The signaling system (SS7) and other softswitches also operate within this layer. The access softswitch enables converged services via APIs and connects calls to or from the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

Applications Layer - The applications layer supports feature servers, application servers, and Application Service Providers (ASPs). Working through standard interfaces, service providers via the access softswitch, have access to transparent next generation services and applications.
