Byline: KAREN MAESHIRO Staff Writer

to Westside schools, the school at 52nd Street West and Avenue N-8 will accommodate kindergartners through sixth-graders, drawing youths from neighborhoods that now send pupils to Del Sur, Rancho Vista and Sundown schools.

``We hope to have it operational no later than 2008-09, potentially part way through next year,'' Superintendent Regina Rossall said. ``It will be an all-temporary school, meaning all portable buildings, including the office and cafeteria cafeteria: see restaurant. .''

Expected to cost $17million to $18million, the school will be paid for with a combination of developer fees collected from home builders, state matching funds Noun 1. matching funds - funds that will be supplied in an amount matching the funds available from other sources

at Rancho Vista, so it can then have room to take in students from Esperanza School, which opened three years ago and already has more than 1,000 pupils.

Westside now has 11 schools and 8,700 students, and officials expect continuing home construction in west Palmdale and west Lancaster will add another 4,000 during the next five years.

Westside voters in June rejected Measure K, a $67.5million school construction bond, which officials said would have helped finance three elementary schools and a middle school.

Options being considered to accommodate the influx include pursuing a new bond issue no later than 2008, adopting a multitrack mul·ti·track

If Westside does change to a multitrack, year-round schedule, it would be limited to the district's most crowded schools: Esperanza, Rancho Vista, Sundown and potentially Del Sur.

Rossall said there is no room to add more portable classrooms at Rancho Vista. More portable classrooms are being added to Sundown, bringing the total to nine this year.

``At some point in time, you can only take out so much play space,'' Rossall said.
