WESTON expands life cycle assessment consulting practice.

WEST CHESTER, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 2, 1994--Three noted authorities on product and process life cycle assessments have joined Roy F. Weston Inc. (WESTON), leading international environmental consultants, it was announced Wednesday.

Life cycle assessment, or LCA, is an emerging science for helping industry and government prevent pollution and reduce environmental costs. LCA thoroughly evaluates each stage of a product, process or service from initial concept and design through use, recycling and decommissioning to minimize environmental burdens present throughout the entire cycle.

Prior to joining WESTON, all three LCA specialists served with Scientific Certification Systems, Inc. (SCS), Oakland, Calif., a prominent environmental certification and labeling company.

Derek Augood, Ph.D., formerly Director of Certification at SCS, brings nearly 40 years of management experience in the chemical environment, serving with both DuPont Polychemicals Division and Kaiser Aluminum.

At SCS, he spent five years developing and executing programs for certifying single attribute claims and LCA calculations for several products and industries. Augood earned a doctorate in chemistry from the University of London and a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Cambridge.

William Smart adds 8 years of strategic business planning and information systems management experience. As Business Development Manager at SCS since 1991, he initiated environmental certification programs for hazardous pollutants in paints and coatings, and for resource and energy efficient durable goods. In addition, he has made technical and operations contributions to more than a dozen life cycle studies.

Smart received a master's degree in business administration from Columbia University and a bachelor's degree in geology and geophysics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Cho Nai Cheung has eight years of chemical process engineering and computer modeling experience.

During her three years at SCS as an Environmental Certification Engineer, she conducted life cycle assessments on basic materials such as plastics, paper products steel and glass, as well as on products made from these materials. She was graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.

Also joining WESTON's LCA practice is Agis D. Veroutis, a recent graduate of Cranfield University in the U.K. with a master's degree in life cycle analysis. Veroutis also received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and manufacturing systems from Stevens Institute of Technology, a leading technical university.

According to James A. Fava, Ph.D., WESTON's Director of Product Stewardship and Management Systems, the four new specialists increase WESTON's dedicated LCA practice to ten professionals with more than 22 years of combined experience in the rapidly growing discipline.

Fava said that WESTON has conducted 50 preliminary and comprehensive life cycle inventory assessments for corporations and government agencies and is committed to expanding its leadership in the international LCA arena.

"We are confident our proven LCA track record, coupled with our pollution prevention experience, design-for-environment services and fate and effect testing operations, position WESTON solidly at the forefront of this emerging market," he said.

Pioneering the industry since 1957, WESTON (NASDAQ:WSTNA) has become a leading international environmental management, design and consulting firm working in the public and private sectors to preserve, protect and restore vital air, land and water resources.

More than 2,700 WESTON people specialize in strategic pollution prevention counsel, analytical laboratory services, engineering, facility construction and operations, on-site remediation and large-scale turnkey programs.

WESTON has 55 offices and laboratories across the U.S. and international operations based in Ireland, Italy, Taiwan and the Peoples' Republic of China. -0- WESTON is a registered trademark of Roy F. Weston Inc.
