WESTON WINS U.S. ARMY STUDY CONTRACT VALUED UP TO $20 MILLION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUP OF HISTORIC ARSENAL

WEST CHESTER, Pa., Nov. 19 ~PRNewswire~ -- Once the nation's gateway to Europe for ordnance shipments during two World Wars, the former Raritan Arsenal, now New Jersey's largest industrial park, is undergoing environmental cleanup.
Nationwide environmental services firm Roy F. Weston, Inc. (NASDAQ: WSTNA) (WESTON)(R) today has been tasked by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to continue the remedial investigation effort. Under a year-long contract with four one-year options valued up to $20 million, WESTON is responsible for determining the nature and extent of contamination, designing the cleanup program and providing engineering support during subsequent construction.
The former arsenal, covering approximatelye industrial park complex, the site includes a community college, a county recreational park and other public facilities.
According to WESTON Vice President Peter B. Lederman, of the company's Edison office, "The cleanup mission promises to be one of WESTON's most challenging assignments, not only in terms of project size and scope, but because of the active on-site commercial occupancy and high public visibility."
Contamination of multiple sites within the former arsenal grounds resulted from routine shipping, storage and destruction of weapons and munitions beginning in 1917. Presence of chemical and ordnance-related wastes from seepage or burial has been determined by previous Army field inspections.
Military operations at the Raritan Arsenal were phased out between 1961 and 1963. Soon after, the proximity of the arsenal property to the New York metropolitan area attracted a wide variety of governmental, educational and industrial tenants.
Headquartered in Edison, WESTON's N.J. operations employ more than 200 environmental scientists, engineers and project support specialists. The local office specializes in environmental remedial investigations and feasibility studies, industrial health and safety programs, process safety, pollution prevention and risk management services.
WESTON is a nationwide environmental engineering, design and consulting firm specializing in analytical services, remediation, facility construction and operations, technical information management and major program services for government and industry. The company is headquartered in West Chester, and operates a national network of 45 offices and laboratories including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Boston, Atlanta and Washington.
