WESTMORELAND FIRM RECEIVES ADDITIONAL STATE FUNDS

HARRISBURG, Pa., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Gov. Robert P. Casey today announced that a Westmoreland County firm that makes respiratory equipment has received a $978,395 state loan to help it expand and create 296 new jobs during the next three years.
Respironics Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: RESP), which the governor visited last week, will use the Business Infrastructure Development (BID) loan to help pay for water, sewer, drainage, utility and parking facilities.
The infrastructure improvements will help the Murrysville, Pa., company to expand its existing building and add a new building on an adjacent property.
Respironics, one of the fastest growing companies in southwestern Pennsylvania, has received $8.6 million in state economic development financing since 1989. The company currently employs 360 people.
The total cost of the current expansion project is $9.8 million, which also includes a low-interest state loan of $2 million approved earlier this year by the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority.
Administered by the Department of Commerce, the BID program provides grants and low-interest loans to municipalities on behalf of industrial firms to acquire land and construct access roads, water and sewer treatment facilities, storm drainage systems and rail and port facilities.
Last Thursday, Casey led a group of corporate executives from around the country on a tour of Respironics to demonstrate Pennsylvania's commitment to providing financial and technical assistance to small- and medium-sized companies.
In 1992, he presented the Governor's New Product Award to Respironics for its BiPAP unit, which provides ventilatory assistance to persons who experience difficulty breathing but who are not dependent on a ventilator for life support.
