WESTINGHOUSE WINS ACOUSTO-OPTIC DEFLECTOR CONTRACT

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Westinghouse Electric Corporation (NYSE: WX) will build 20 acousto-optic laser-beam deflectors made of an advanced infrared (IR) material under an $860,000 contract awarded by the U.S. Air Force.
The Arnold Engineering Development Center at Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee ordered the dual-axis IR deflectors for its direct-write scene generator test chamber. The Air Force uses the chamber to measure the performance of arrays of IR detector elements used in aerospace applications for locating distant heat-emitting objects. Arnold's tests measure the two-dimensional arrays' sensitivity to faint IR objects as well as the uniformity of performance of their individual elements.
Researchers developed the special material, called thallium arsenic selenide or TAS, at the Westinghouse Science & Technology Center here. It was selected for the Air Force program because of its outstanding acousto-optic properties at IR wavelengths, said company fellow scientist Lyle H. Taylor, including one of the highest known resolutions of any IR deflector. "High resolution makes it possible to pinpoint individual elements with high accuracy, a capability critical to effective array testing," Dr. Taylor explained.
Eighteen of the deflectors will be designed to operate at a wavelength of 5.4 micrometers and two at 10.6 micrometers.
