WESTINGHOUSE PROVIDES INFORMATION KIOSK SYSTEM FOR LIGHT RAIL
PASSENGERS, TRANSIT COMMUTERS AT ORIOLE PARK
BALTIMORE, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- An innovative information kiosk provided by Westinghouse is helping direct thousands of fans as they converge on the new Oriole Park at Camden Yards for games during the 1992 baseball season.
The kiosk system made its debut recently as part of Maryland Mass Transit Administration's (MTA) new light rail system in Baltimore. The kiosk's easy to use touchscreen monitor provides customers with MTA schedules and maps, Maryland points of interest, and a users guide.
"Westinghouse has provided a system in step with our goals to provide more user friendly transit service," commented Ron Hartman, MTA general manager, "And the demand certainly exists; we estimate that more than 30 percent of the 44,000 fans attending the opening game used public transportation."
Westinghouse and the MTA are looking at the possibility of installing a networked system of kiosks at every light rail stop. They could also be installed at other high foot traffic areas in the city and surrounding areas. "The system is part of a larger activity at Westinghouse focused on helping municipalities nationwide to cost efficiently automate their transit systems," explained Bill Jones, general manager of Westinghouse's Transportation Management Systems Division. "After key contract wins in Baltimore, Denver and Milwaukee, Westinghouse is recognized as a leader in this emerging industry. We accomplished this by successfully transferring defense-oriented communication technologies to smart commercial applications."
