WESTINGHOUSE AWARDED $40-MILLION CONTRACT FOR POWER GENERATION EQUIPMENT

 WESTINGHOUSE AWARDED $40-MILLION CONTRACT
 FOR POWER GENERATION EQUIPMENT
ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Westinghouse Electric Corporation (NYSE: WX) today announced it has been awarded a contract for more than $40 million to supply power generating equipment for the Cardinal Cogeneration Plant, which will be owned and operated by Sithe Energies, Inc.
The Cardinal Cogeneration Plant is under construction in Ontario. The plant will supply electricity to Ontario Hydro and process steam for the Canadian Starch Company's corn products facility in Cardinal, Ontario.
Westinghouse will supply the power island for the 150-megawatt plant to NEICO Canada, Inc., the turnkey contractor. The Westinghouse equipment includes a 100-megawatt Model 501D5 combustion turbine-generator, a 50-megawatt steam turbine-generator, a heat recovery steam generator and other balance-of-plant equipment.
"By selecting Westinghouse to supply the entire power island, our customer has taken an approach that will maximize the Cardinal Plant's reliability," said Frank R. Bakos, vice president and general manager of the Westinghouse Power Generation business unit.
"I'm gratified and honored that the performance of Westinghouse turbines has earned the confidence of Sithe Energies, NEICO and Ontario Hydro," Bakos said.
During the past five years, the Westinghouse Model 501D5 combustion turbines have achieved a cumulative average availability of 95 percent and an average reliability of 98 percent. Westinghouse steam turbines have achieved an average availability of more than 95 percent.
The plant will operate in the highly efficient combined cycle configuration, recycling waste heat from the combustion turbine to drive the steam turbine.
The natural gas-fired plant will meet Ontario's rigorous environmental standards by employing Westinghouse's dry low-NOx combustion system incorporated in the combustion turbine.
Major combustion turbine components will be produced by the Westinghouse facility in Hamilton, Ontario. Westinghouse facilities in Charlotte and Winston-Salem, N.C., will also manufacture components, and the unit will be assembled at the company's Pensacola, Fla., manufacturing plant. Westinghouse will produce the steam turbine at its Charlotte facility.
The equipment is scheduled for delivery during the second half of 1993. The Cardinal Cogeneration Plant is scheduled for commercial operation during the summer of 1994.
NEICO Canada, Inc., is a subsidiary of Northern Engineering, Inc., of Houston. Northern Engineering is a subsidiary of AGRA Industries, Ltd., a diversified engineering and construction company based in Calgary, Alberta.
Sithe Energies, Inc., of New York, is a growing independent power production company, with over 3,000 megawatts of power generating capacity either in development, under construction or in operation.
Westinghouse Electric Corporation, a leader in the global power generation business, has supplied more than 280,000 megawatts of power generating capacity, including more than 180 cogeneration plants. Westinghouse is based in Pittsburgh. Its Power Generation business unit is headquartered in Orlando.
