WESTINGHOUSE, ROLLS-ROYCE FORM ALLIANCE FOR POWER GENERATION

WESTINGHOUSE, ROLLS-ROYCE FORM ALLIANCE FOR POWER GENERATION
LONDON, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Westinghouse Electric Corporation (NYSE: WX) and Rolls-Royce, Plc., today announced a multi-faceted agreement that will strengthen both companies in the power generation business worldwide.
The 15-year agreement covers technology transfer, joint development of combustion turbine technology and marketing of combustion turbines and combined cycle power plants. It complements the existing Westinghouse trilateral industrial combustion turbine relationships with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and FiatAvio.
The agreement is expected to enhance the two companies' competitive and strategic positions in the worldwide land-based power generation business.
Under terms of the agreement, Rolls-Royce will transfer aero-engine technology to Westinghouse for incorporation into the existing and future industrial combustion turbine designs of Westinghouse, Mitsubishi and FiatAvio. Westinghouse will transfer selected steam turbine, combustion turbine and combined cycle technologies to Rolls-Royce.
In addition, Westinghouse and Rolls-Royce have agreed to cooperate in marketing of the Rolls-Royce aero-derived gas turbine engines for power generation applications. This allows Westinghouse to extend its product range by developing Econopacs, Westinghouse power plant packages, incorporating Rolls-Royce's world-renowned aero engines. In turn, it provides greater opportunities for Rolls-Royce to market its aero-derived engines to the power generation industry.
Westinghouse and Rolls-Royce will also cooperate in research to extend Westinghouse's current 60 Hz combined cycle reference plant designs to 50 Hz plants to support the expanding demand for 50 Hz combustion turbine-based combined cycle power plants.
"The prospect of two blue-chip technology companies commonly focused on technology, quality and customer satisfaction is exciting. I believe it is the wave of the future in delivering reliable, low-cost products to the world market. The concept is visionary," said Frank R. Bakos, vice president and general manager of the Westinghouse Power Generation business unit.
Dr. Terry Harrison, managing director of the Rolls-Royce Industrial Power Group, said, "This agreement is going to provide considerable benefits to utility and industrial customers. The quality of the aero technology available from Rolls-Royce will enhance combustion turbine designs and the introduction of the 50-megawatt industrial Trent aero-derived engine, when available, will be a significant breakthrough at this power level.
Westinghouse Electric Corporation is a world leader in the power generation industry. Through its Power Generation business unit, based in Orlando, Fla., the company has supplied more than 280,000 megawatts of power generating capacity worldwide. Westinghouse is a diversified, technology-based enterprise headquartered in Pittsburgh.
