WESTINGHOUSE, LOCAL UNIVERSITIES FORM PARTNERSHIPS ON TOTAL QUALITY

PITTSBURGH, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Westinghouse Electric Corporation's (NYSE: WX) Productivity and Quality Center here is entering into separate partnerships of Total Quality learning with Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh as part of a program involving a consortium of companies and universities throughout the nation called "University Challenge," it was announced today.
The objective of the program, according to Aris Melissaratos, vice president of corporate productivity and quality for Westinghouse, is to encourage colleges and universities to integrate Total Quality into their curricula and to research and practice Total Quality as a part of their day-to-day operations. Total Quality is a management model and leadership philosophy that builds within organizations a culture of continuous improvement which emphasizes performance leadership in meeting customer requirements.
"This is a unique opportunity for companies with particular expertise in Total Quality principles and practices to share their knowledge with the academic community. We are pleased, as a pioneering company in this field, to have this opportunity to work with both the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University in not only sharing with them our experiences in Total Quality, but helping them structure programs of their own."
This spring or summer, Westinghouse and the other companies involved in the challenge will hold a symposium for faculty and administrators from each of the schools. These will be separate sessions for each school lasting from three to five days. After each symposium, the university and the company will work together to develop a follow-up plan that best meets the strategic needs of the university.
In addition to Duquesne and the University of Pittsburgh, Westinghouse is also forming partnerships with the University of Maryland and Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
The University Challenge was started in 1992 with five companies. This year's effort, which is being coordinated by Procter & Gamble, will add 11 new ones, including Westinghouse, which received the coveted
Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1988. Twenty universities are joining the challenge this year.
