WESTINGHOUSE, CAROLINA POWER & LIGHT SETTLE NUCLEAR PLANT DISPUTE

PITTSBURGH, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Westinghouse Electric Corporation (NYSE: WX) and the Carolina Power & Light Company (NYSE: CPL) today announced that they have settled a longstanding dispute over two nuclear plants owned and operated by the utility.
The agreement settles all claims by the utility in two separate lawsuits over the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant and the H.B. Robinson Nuclear Power Plant. It also settles outstanding claims by Westinghouse against the utility.
The settlement resolves a dispute over cancellation charges for nuclear steam supply systems for three Shearon Harris units that were not built. It also resolves unique claims that were asserted during the warranty period for steam generators for the Shearon Harris plant, as well as claims regarding steam generators supplied for the H.B. Robinson Nuclear Plant which were at issue in another lawsuit. The settlement covers a total of nine steam generators.
"We're pleased to have reached an amicable settlement of this dispute, which involves issues unique to the Shearon Harris and H.B. Robinson Plants," said John B. Yasinsky, group president of Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
"Westinghouse and Carolina Power & Light both emerge as winners with this settlement, which is based on the long-term reliable and cost effective operation of both nuclear plants."
The specific terms of the settlement are confidential. The settlement will have no material adverse effect on Westinghouse's operations or financial condition.
"From the beginning, we've worked to resolve these and other disputes through constructive commercial discussions rather than through litigation," Dr. Yasinsky said. "We're delighted that we've achieved this very positive resolution, and we're looking forward to an excellent long-term working relationship with Carolina Power & Light in the future."
