WESTERN WASTE PERMITS AND OPENS HOUSTON SPECIAL WASTE LANDFILL

WESTERN WASTE PERMITS AND OPENS HOUSTON SPECIAL WASTE LANDFILL
LOS ANGELES, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Western Waste Industries (NYSE: WW) announced today that its 100-acre Conroe, Texas special- waste landfill has been permitted by the Texas Water Commission. The company estimates that revenue will increase by $3 million in the first year, and substantially thereafter, because of additional waste received at the site. The landfill's life span is estimated to be in excess of 20 years.
Prior to permitting this landfill as a Class I industrial disposal site (special waste), the facility was permitted as a municipal co-disposal landfill with limited ability to receive special waste. This landfill was one of four Type I industrial non- hazardous sites in the state. Type I facilities must receive concurrence from the state and have limits on disposal volumes.
The landfill is now a Class I site and is the only currently operating immediate volume site in Texas. The landfill, as permitted, can receive unrestricted volumes of Class I industrial non-hazardous waste.
The landfill, is located 35 miles north of Houston, next to an operating Western Waste municipal solid waste site.
"Prior to this permit, our customers had a few expensive options to dispose of this special waste," said Kosti Shirvanian, Western Waste's chairman and president. "They could either wait months for the consents and take it to a Type I landfill, take it to a hazardous waste landfill or incinerator at very high tip fees, or ship out of state and incur expensive transportation costs. Now our customers have an environmentally sound, cost-effective choice -- our Conroe landfill."
Western Waste operates seven landfills. The company is currently constructing an already permitted special waste site outside of Baton Rouge, La. and is in the process of permitting a special waste site near Lake Charles, La.
The company is a leading integrated solid waste management company, providing collecting, recycling, composting and disposal services for commercial, industrial and residential customers. Western Waste has locations in California, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana and Colorado.
