WESTERN WASTE ANNOUNCES SECOND QUARTER RESULTS

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Western Waste Industries (NYSE: WW) today announced that revenue for the second fiscal quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992, increased to $57,280,000 from $53,313,000 in the prior year's quarter. Net income was $2,240,000, or $.16 per share, compared with $2,668,000, or $.19 per share, in the same quarter of fiscal 1992.
For the six-month period, revenue rose to $115,418,000 from $104,945,000 a year earlier, while net income was $4,606,000, or $.33 per share vs. $5,386,000, or $.38 per share, in the corresponding period last year.
"Year over year, our revenue has continued to grow in each of our business segments," said Kosti Shirvanian, president and chief executive officer. "However, during the most recent quarter, our commercial and industrial revenue was impacted adversely by the heavy rains in California and the lingering weak economy.
"During the quarter, we engaged in several projects including the start up of our San Jose, Calif., collection operation, which begins July 1, 1993. A portion of the costs associated with these projects were expensed."
The Environmental Impact Report associated with the company's waste-by-rail landfill, the Mesquite Regional Landfill, is expected to be released shortly, according to Shirvanian. "As we study the site, we have reconfirmed its feasibility and environmental integrity," he said. "Our partnership, California InteRail, is aggressively pursuing completing this project to handle a large portion of Southern California's substantial waste disposal needs,"
Western Waste Industries is a leading integrated solid waste management company, providing collection, recycling, composting and disposal services for commercial, industrial and residential customers. The company has locations in California, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana and Colorado.
