Byline: Erik Boal Special to the Daily News

Last week, Cleveland High of Reseda was the only noncharter, nonmagnet high school in the City Section to be honored as a California Distinguished School.

, Cleveland took another step toward distinguishing itself as the section's best aquatics program.

With the City preliminaries less than three weeks away, the Cavaliers girls' team showcased why it is the favorite to repeat as section champion, while its boys' team led a group of three schools - Birmingham of Lake Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999).  and El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

of Woodland Hills being the others - who could challenge for the crown.

``I know there's plenty of (talent) over the hill and my kids know it too,'' Cleveland coach Teresa Frias said, referring to the challenges from Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  of Pacific Palisades, San Pedro and Venice that await the Cavaliers at the prelims May 18.

everyone else and underestimate my team. The kids know we need to keep working and that's why we didn't rest for this meet. And until we do, I'll still be kicking their butts (in training).''

Although the meet was a nonscoring competition, the unofficial total for the Cleveland girls' team would have been more than 200 points better than El Camino Real, which won six events, including the 200-yard medley med·ley

Chungah Rhee was Cleveland's only individual girls' champion, winning the 100 butterfly (1 minute, 2.57 seconds) and 500 freestyle (5:23.92). But the Cavaliers had four girls finish in the top eight in six of the eight individual events, demonstrating the same depth that was instrumental in them winning their first City title last season.

El Camino Real's Meghan Brown (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) and Jessica Chen (50 and 100 freestyle) each won two events, as did Kennedy of Granada Hills' Hanna Kim (100 backstroke, 200 free).

In the boys' competition, Cleveland's Michael Chiu was the only double winner, capturing the 100 backstroke (57.64) and 200 IM (2:08.11). His teammates, Ashkaun Hami and Albert Han, were victorious in the 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly, respectively.

The Cavaliers also won the 200 medley (1:47.95) and 400 freestyle (3:29.58) relays, and El Camino Real was victorious in the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.25).

``Birmingham, Cleveland and us are all going to be contenders,'' El Camino Real coach Steve Kalan said. ``Our (league) is the fastest (league) in the City, by far.''
