WEST STIFLES EAST, WINS SANTA CLARITA PLAYERS, BIRMINGHAM'S KEYES PROVIDE KEY DEFENSE WEST 17, EAST 3.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Before they move on to college or other endeavors, area prep football players got one last chance to compete against each other Saturday in the East-West All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games  at Birmingham High of Lake Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999). .

The West, minus many of its potential marquee players, used a stifling defense to beat the East 17-3 in the seventh annual game.

The West was without two Birmingham standouts - quarterback Ryan Lombardo and wide receiver/defensive back Chad Green Chad Elton Green (Born: June 28, 1975 in Dunkirk, New York) is a former switch-hitting, righthanded minor league baseball player. An outfielder, he attended Mentor High School and then the University of Kentucky.  - who were on the roster but didn't show up for the game, possibly because Birmingham's prom was the same night. Also, Taft of Woodland Hills football players such as Steve Smith declined to participate.

Dennis Keyes, the Birmingham running back/defensive back who is headed to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

, was the game's big name. He only played on the defensive end, where he is expected to play for the Bruins, and made one sack and some hard hits.

``It's one more game before I leave for college,'' Keyes said. ``It's one more game to play with my teammates and guys whom I respect from other teams.''

Cody Kase from Hart of Newhall was the defensive player of the game, making two sacks and a stop early in the fourth quarter. Kase stuffed East running back Sean Edwards from Palmdale for no gain on fourth-and-goal from the 1 to maintain a 10-point lead.

Valencia's David Shipp and Hart's T.C. Chriss also had sacks. And Shipp recovered a first-half fumble that was caused by teammate Stephan Wright.

Jeremy Kent from Malibu scored the final touchdown, which iced the game for the West with 1:44 remaining. Kent scored on a 1-yard run after a 60-yard reception by Valencia running back Charles Burnley.

``Everyone always talks down to small schools,'' said Kent, the first Malibu player ever to go to a Division I team with a scholarship (to Texas Southern). ``I proved to myself that I can play with the guys out here.''

The game's other touchdown was scored on the first offensive play of the game by the West, a 48-yard touchdown pass between Venice teammates Eddie Miller Eddie Miller can refer to different people:

``I'm not going to play in college so it's not a big deal,'' Marquez said. ``I'm in pain, but it feels good to win MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994.
